Nokia N97 Mini and Sony Ericsson X2 pulled by operators

Nokia N97 Mini and Sony Ericsson X2 pulled by operators - Mobile news

N97 Mini dropped by Orange; Vodafone shelves release of X2 after software issues

Orange has dropped the Nokia N97 Mini from its devices portfolio after high returns, according to industry sources.

Meanwhile, Vodafone has pulled the UK launch of the Sony Ericsson X2.

The X2's problems will come as yet another blow to Sony Ericsson, which last month saw its newly launched Satio dropped by Carphone Warehouse after software glitches prompted high returns.

Orange declined to discuss why it had stopped stocking the N97 Mini. A spokesman told Mobile: 'We can confirm that Orange UK will no longer continue to stock the N97 Mini as part of its existing handset portfolio. We remain committed to supporting the device for existing customers and look forward to working with Nokia in the future.'

One industry source told Mobile: 'The returns rate on the device was quite high.

It was because of a lot of different issues, not just software problems. It was failing Orange's ongoing tests, which are quite rigorous.'

In December, Sony Ericsson confirmed it was delaying the launch of the X2 until early January on the official Experia blog. It stated: 'The software worked fine but when we started integrating it with some of the network specific apps, it threw up a few issues that we're working to fix.'

A Sony Ericsson spokesman confirmed that the X2 will not be released by Vodafone in the UK. He added: 'The delivery date of the product has slipped due to extended testing and the product, which was exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, no longer fits within their planned portfolio.'

A Vodafone spokeswoman said: 'The X2 launch date for the pre-Christmas period was significantly delayed due to a series of technical issues, so it no longer fits with our planned portfolio for this quarter.'

  • Nokia, a once solid company, is now just a total train wreck of a firm.If it weren't for their high amount of candy bar dumb-phones sold in third world countries, Nokia would be toast. And yes, as someone else mentioned, once you have a major technology company run by an attmore»orney...said company's days as a tech leader are behind them. It speaks volumes that their main form of competition now is suing Apple.«less

  • Perfect "personal computer" without any troubles and with widest connection techniques. Top of all. Story is out of order...:)

  • I think operator software does play a part. The N97 I had came via Carphone Warehouse and as such was fairly ltd in the amount of Voda software installed. It was returned after approx 2 weeks and replaced by a Nokia service centre. After the 2.0 firmware upgrade it improved slightly but was still more»hindered by a very poor processor. It just isn't cut out for running multiple apps. I have to say I'm not a fan of Symbian either, certainly not in it's current form.«less

  • Nokia is with very poor smartphone portfolio.

  • Nokia is burning inside. They actually wanted to get rid off everybody over 35 inside Nokia with 1-2 year salary packages. Many very experienced engineers took that option. Outsourcing to India has failed with big quality problems. OVI is a big joke. Internal fighting going on between units. And themore»n this stupid lawyer as CEO who is more interested in suing Apple than actually leading the company. Nokia is now like Commodore in the early 90s.«less

  • the issue was oranges pricing £100 for h/s £40pm 24 months, not software

  • As a Nokia service centre we would suggest that the N97 mini and the N97 releases after August 2009 are now solidly reliable.

Could the problem with the N97 be caused by the addition of the Orange software?

  • No major suprises here, especially with n97 mini given the extremely poor performance in the wild of the original n97. I'm starting to worry about SE though. Are they ever going to release a device that isn't hamstrung with software/hardware issues. This is a major blow to any potentimore»al hopes I had for the X10.«less
