Vodafone clinches Amazon Kindle deal

Vodafone clinches Amazon Kindle deal - Mobile news

Network to provide 3G connectivity for Amazon’s revamped Kindle e-reader

Vodafone has clinched a deal with Amazon to provide the 3G network for its Kindle e-reader device.

The network will provide free 3G wireless using Amazon’s Whispernet technology, with no monthly fees, contracts, or data plans. The cost is instead covered in the price of the books downloaded from the Amazon store.

Amazon launched two redesigned, lighter Kindles and a new e-book store today. The new device, which for the first time can be bought directly from Amazon’s UK site, will be available in the UK on 27 August.

Amazon also announced that the new Kindle will only be available with Wi-Fi connectivity, rather than just with a 3G mobile connection.

Amazon said the new Kindle has 50% better contrast than previous models. It is 21% smaller and 15% lighter and like other models it has a six-inch screen.

The Wi-Fi model will cost £109 in the UK. The version that supports both 3G and Wi-Fi will cost £149.
