The way I see it, the mobile industry is a lot like the Premiership: you’ve got the big boys and then the rest.
For Carphone, think Manchester United. They’ve always been at the top, and they’ll keep stepping on heads to stay up there (even their own staff by the look of their ‘pay rise’).
They built themselves up from scratch fair and square, but eventually lost their values and sold out to yanks.
For Phones 4u, read Chelsea. They were pretty much nothing until Roman Caldwell started splashing the cash, and before you knew it they fought their way to the top.
THE REST
And then you’ve got the likes of Barking Mobile, AKA West Ham United. We’re honest, hard working and try to do things the proper way… But where has that got us? You don’t need me to tell you how big the gap is between us and them. The annoying thing is that stuff happens all the time that widens that gulf.
RICH GET RICHER
This new mini-laptop phenomenon will be to the mobile industry what the Champions League is to football – a great new revenue opportunity for the rich to get richer, but well out of reach for the small fish.
It’s common knowledge that bundling these laptops with dongles is going to be the big money maker this Christmas, but not for us. Small dealers don’t have the buying power to get involved in laptops, our pockets simply aren’t deep enough.
So all we can do is sit back and hope that the big boys eventually implode with greed. In the words of Kevin Keegan: ‘I would love it…’
