Sony Ericsson hit by further shortages

Retailers yet to receive shipments of Xperia Arc resort to pre-ordering for eager customers

Sony Ericsson is struggling to meet demand for its Xperia Arc handset as the effect of the Japan earthquake continues to hit the industry.

Many retailers yet to receive shipments of the new smartphone have now resorted to pre-ordering the Xperia Arc for eager customers instead.

A Carphone Warehouse spokesman said: ‘We do currently have stock shortages of the Arc in some of our stores. We are getting a shipment soon.’

Sony Ericsson confirmed last week (19 April) that the situation in Japan had resulted in supply chain disruptions when it published its Q1 results.

The manufacturer said: ‘Towards the end of the quarter we introduced the highly anticipated Xperia Arc and Xperia Play, which have been well-received by both operators and consumers around the world.

‘However, the Japan earthquake made it a challenging quarter operationally and we are experiencing some disruptions to our supply chain. We will continue to evaluate the situation.’

The news will be a massive blow to Sony Ericsson, which has invested heavily in marketing the Xperia Arc and Play handsets since their launch last month.
