Apps outpacing phone call and text use on smartphones

Research for Sunday Times shows more than half UK residents own a smartphone

More than 50% of smartphone owners use their devices for apps more than calls or texts, a new survey has claimed.

Research for the Sunday Times, ahead of the publication of its inaugural Apps List 2012 this Sunday (22 January), found more than half the UK population own a smartphone. It said 80% of all apps downloaded were free. The research revealed that in the final week of last year, 81 million apps were downloaded in the UK alone.

The research also found that smartphone owners have an average of 38 apps on their device and half download a new app at least once a week.

However, it also revealed that more than half of those surveyed use their phones for apps more than any other purpose, including emails, texts and making phone calls.
