Sales of EE 4G contracts have grown 10% each week since EE launched its 4G service in November last year, EE CEO Olaf Swantee has said.
Enterprise sales have also picked up, with over 1,000 corporations already signed up for EE 4G services.
Speaking at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today (25 February), Swantee said the industry was on the cusp of a ‘golden age of mobile.’
He told delegates that EE’s 4G network is delivering ‘some of the fastest 4G speeds in Europe,’ claiming average speeds of more than 16mbps and peak speeds of 50mbps.
Swantee also said EE 4G sales do not bear out the need for unlimited 4G tariffs. He said: ‘Currently, the average 4G customer uses 1.4GB of data per month. It shows that the instinct for unlimited data plans is unnecessary.’
Consumers on EE 4G are showing a strong appetite for video, with over 25% of 4G traffic video based and 11% on YouTube alone.
Swantee attributed this usage to ‘the quality of the network mixed with engaging content.’
He added: ‘The experience is so good over 4G. No waiting, no buffering, no fuss.’
Beyond video, Swantee said maps, mobile banking and video-calling in particular had seen the biggest uplift in use compared to 3G.
Swantee said the industry was set for expansion powered by 4G services. He added, 'It’s clear that the network is back as the hero of the mobile industry. Superfast and super-reliable, it allows you to do more, play more, trade more.’
