O2 says prepay 3G iPhone hitting expectations

O2 has denied suggestions that sales of the prepay 3G iPhone have got off to a slow start.

Mobile was informed by O2 and Carphone store staff that sales of the prepay device have been sluggish so far because customers are balking at the £349 and £399 price tags.

However, O2’s head of prepay, Alistair Johnston, contests this claim. He told Mobile: ‘On launch day, we sold twice as many prepay iPhones as all of our other prepay handsets put together. The prepay iPhone is going to be very big this Christmas, especially as we’re seeing growing consumer demand for prepay phones.’

Johnston added that sales of the more expensive 16GB version of the device are currently double that of sales of the 8GB model.
