Hughes has reshaped Woolworths’ approach to mobile phones as a category, and greatly improved the quality of business. Gone are the cheap deals beloved of box breakers.

She has brought in direct purchasing from manufacturers rather than distributors, and has used her knowledge and reach into the midteens market to influence the products it brings to market.

Clever bundling of accessories, trinkets and content for her target audience has ensured sales are strong. As a result, Hughes has arguably had more impact as an individual than other non-specialist buyers.
