Power 50 Profile: David Fowler, CTO-Europe, Huawei
The Chinese technology firm has made itself a name to reckon with in a very short time. It overtook Alcatel-Lucent in 2009 and has been jostling with Nokia Siemens Networks for the No. 2 position in the mobile equipment industry behind Ericsson. In 2009, it was named as the world’s top patent seeker. Huawei makes dongles and phones (for Vodafone in the UK), but where it is really making its mark is as a leading provider of LTE or next generation mobile infrastructure.
Huawei has pioneered LTE trials in both Europe and Asia, working with both O2 and Vodafone. Fowler, a past head of network services at Vodafone, oversees the group’s technical activities in Europe. The company has already built a test LTE network for TeliaSonera in Oslo and won an equipment deal under Ericsson’s nose to build an LTE network in Sweden. Huawei is sure to be an active presence on the UK scene as network operators put together their investment plans for the 4G network and prepare to bid for spectrum licences in 2011.
