2011 Distribution

Brightstar Europe has stormed the market over the past 12 months under the stewardship of industry veteran Rod Millar. Millar is seen as a dynamic force in the industry, driving Brightstar into new markets through an acquisition strategy which, sources say, included a bid for rival Data Select. If Millar can pull this off, Brightstar will become the only UK distributor with direct relationships with all major manufacturers. Millar’s team pulled off a major coup late last year, hitching Brightstar Europe’s wagon to that of rising star HTC and throwing down the gauntlet to rivals by clinching a major deal to supply HTC handsets in the UK. Millar is also expanding the business in new directions, with ambitions to become a major distributor of mobile accessories across the UK and Europe following its acquisition of accessory specialist Battrex, via its purchase of parent company Triade, earlier this year.

2009 Convergence

Suffering the twin blows of missing out on a Nokia supply deal, and having Brightstar’s main handset supplier (Motorola) non-existent in the market, the distributor should be dead and buried. Millar has confounded expectations after combining powers with IT distribution partner TechData to be a leader in bringing the IT and mobile worlds together.He has brought laptops to Phones 4u as well as other retailers and dealers of all sizes. He has resisted entering the grey market for short-term profits, and has started making gains against the odds as a dominant player in IT/Mobile distribution.
