Power 50 Profile: Tim Watkins, Western Europe VP, Huawei

2011 Manufacturers

Tim Watkins has played a leading role in helping Huawei UK make its mark this year as a disruptive force that's shaking up both the mobile and infrastructure market. Industry analysts say this is the company to watch, and Huawei makes no secret of its ambitions to become a major smartphone manufacturer and infrastructure provider in the UK. Watkins has been pivotal in helping the UK team clinch two key deals this year – the award of a major deal to integrate and upgrade Everything Everywhere's Orange and T-Mobile 2G networks and the appointment of industry veteran Mark Mitchinson as executive VP of UK and Ireland. The Everything Everywhere deal sees Huawei arrive as a key infrastructure player in the UK, snatching the deal from under the noses of established rivals such as Nokia Siemens, Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson. Mitchinson’s appointment caused a significant stir in the smartphone industry. His arrival at Huawei signals the Chinese giant’s ambition to become a key contender in the UK’s smartphone market. Watkins has also led the marketing push behind the firm’s UK launch of the Android-powered IDEOS smartphone, developed in close collaboration with Google, which is Huawei's first step into the OEM environment.
