Power 50 Profile: Ed Vaizey, Culture minister, Coalition Government
2011 Agent Provocateurs
The last year has seen the conclusion of several years worth of behind-the-scenes lobbying and deal-making over the reallocation of spectrum. Government minister Vaizey has been the heart of the decision-making process which will have a bearing on the operator landscape for the next decade. Vaizey worked closely with Ofcom chief Ed Richards and Graham Louth to push through a solution. The untangling of the legacy where O2 and Vodafone were on one frequency and Orange, T-Mobile and Three on another as the appetite for data began to overwhelm the networks was, as expected, a bitterly contested matter. Vaizey not only had to ensure that the networks would continue to invest in data, but also that access to 3G speeds was reliable and broadly accessible across the country. His influence has ensured that the telecoms market remains fair and competitive.
