Power 50 Profile: Stefan Öberg, VP of telecoms, Skype
2008 Agents Provocateur
The threat of skype stampeded operators into sudden moves to acquire broadband partners or subsidiaries. It was also one half of a pincer movement threatening their economics.
The established mobile operators have been fearful of the threat of free calls – and the challenge comes from Öberg. He has been looking at the hardware to make the proposition compelling, using Windows’ user interface and the capability to make free calls over Wi-Fi. Öberg has experience working for operators in Sweden, Estonia and Russia, as well as for consumer products.
The lack of a clear money-making model at Skype has stood out since eBay’s $2.6bn acquisition of the internet phone brand. But Skype’s deal with 3 has been welcomed as a step in the right direction.
