Van Overbeke is described as the reason Orange hasn’t been cut adrift of the market. New ideas and passion on customer service and retail have been the hallmark of his last year at Orange. He has been given a new remit covering all of Orange’s sales and customer service points, across mobile and broadband.Van Overbeke has set out to change the mentality of the organisation, working closely with retail director Sian Doyle and customer services chief Jacquie O’Leary, so that both departments work together to deliver collective targets on sales and service.

Orange has carried out an aggressive assault on the market over the last 12 months, especially in the run-up to Christmas. Van Overbeke is credited with a strategy that has eaten heavily into Orange’s margins, but it has delivered an upturn in customer numbers and kept turnover ticking. He is described as ‘provocative’, and is unafraid to challenge the status quo. Van Overbeke, who replaced Alexis Dormandy in the marketing function in January 2006, told Nokia that Orange wouldn’t range handsets with Nokia’s Music Store when the manufacturer launched the N95 8GB and N81 in October last year.
