Manufacturer announces plans to stay on top at Pixon launch

Samsung has underlined its commitment to holding onto its number one spot for market share after revealing that more flagship devices are planned for Q1 next year.

The manufacturer has arguably had its busiest ever year in terms of flagship handset releases with an intensive strategy that some have dismissed as unsustainable.

However, Samsung UK general manager, Derek Williamson, told Mobile: ‘We will keep being aggressive next year. We’ve got some incredible products coming out in Q1. It’s a really exciting portfolio.’

Williamson was speaking at the launch of Samsung’s latest 8 megapixel camera phone Pixon. The device will be given the biggest marketing push of all Samsung devices in the run up to Christmas. A total of £4.5m will be thrown behind the campaign, a similar amount that was afforded to the Soul and the Tocco.

Williamson said he expects all the networks to range Pixon and that both Phones 4u and Carphone will sell it. However only Phones 4u appears close to stocking the device; staff expect it to be on shelves within the next week.

He also revealed that 'Pixon' will become the brand name for Samsung's future camera devices, in the same way that Sony Ericsson calls its camera phones 'Cyber-Shot'.

The Pixon is the slimmest 8 megapixel camera phone on the UK market. The camera offers a 16x digital zoom, face detection and geo-tagging. The device has a 3.2 inch touch screen.
