Virgin Media scolded for losing thousands of customer details

Information watchdog finds Virgin Media in breach of data protection act

Virgin Media has been reprimanded by the information watchdog ICO for losing thousands of Carphone Warehouse customer’s personal details.

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) found Virgin Media in breach of the Data Protection Act after the details of the 3000 Carphone Warehouse customers were lost on 29 May this year after a disc containing the data was passed to Virgin Media.

The ICO has ordered Virgin to take immediate action to prevent any more security breaches.

The news comes as Virgin struck a new deal with Carphone that will see Virgin take the lead spot in the retailer’s broadband section

Virgin’s sales director Rob Shardlow said of the new deal: ‘This marks the beginning of a significant push into Carphone’s broadband category for us. Its taken a lot of effort and a fair while to get here, but we’re really excited about it.’
