Woolworths launches new download site for mobiles - Mobile news

Retailer to scrap CD singles in favour of digital downloads for mobiles and PCs

Woolworths today launched a digital download site for mobiles, on the same day that the retailer announced that from August it will no longer sell CD singles in its stores.

Woolworths new site, which uses sister company EUK’s digital delivery platform, will offer ringtones, wallpaper and Java-based games for mobiles. Customers will also be able to download music, games and film and TV content to their PCs.

The high street retailer says its new site is designed to appeal to people that are not experienced at downloading, and customers that currently download but are looking for an easier option.

Mobile content will be priced from £1.50, while the top ten music tracks cost 59p for the first week the site is live, with all other tracks from 77p.

Woolworths commercial director Jim Batchelor said: ‘Digital downloading is now the true customer choice for listening and purchasing single music tracks. CDs are alive and well for album sales, but unfortunately the physical singles market is in terminal decline.’
