How many years have you been in the business?
I’ve had seven years at Phonebox Hexham Ltd, but I’ve been in the industry since 1998.
How many staff do you have?
There are four full-time staff and myself.
Where are you based?
We are based in Hexham and Darlington – in the north-east.
Do you deal directly or through a distributor?
Through distributors: Yes Telecom for Vodafone, and HSC for Orange.
Which networks do you sell?
We sell all networks but currently we concentrate on Orange and Vodafone.
What do you sell?
Consumer and business contracts, fixed-line solutions for b2b, and everything for consumers in retail.
What products or services are popular at the moment?
Many of my customers prefer the BlackBerry Curve Javelin to the iPhone. The Parrot Bluetooth car kits are also selling well – they are very easy to use and are compatible with everything, which is a unique selling point.
How has the industry changed with the introduction of revenue share?
On the whole, it is better. It took a little while to understand all the ins and outs, but we feel a lot more comfortable than we did one year ago. The model works if you have quality business and that’s what we have collected over the last seven years.
What challenges do you face as a dealer and how are you overcoming them?
The biggest challenge is to adapt quickly to changes. I think we’ve been better at this than some other dealers due to our relatively small size.
What handset are you personally using at the moment?
I use the BlackBerry Curve Javelin because it does everything I want it to, and it’s a nice looking phone – not bulky at all.
