inside the technology centre of How operators can meet the in-building coverage challenge Networks should see the provision of better in-building wireless coverage as a revenue opportunity Providing in-building wireless coverage is one of the biggest challenges facing mobile operators today. Mobile data usage is soaring and the situation is exacerbated by the fact that 80% to 90% of sessions originate inside buildings where wireless coverage is often poor. The situation is only getting worse with the introduction of 4G LTE, which is designed to encourage higher data usage. Mobile network operators (MNOs) need to find a costeffective solution that can be deployed quickly and efficiently, while minimising disruption. Relying on conventional cellular macro networks to beam the signal into the building from outside is no longer a practical solution to meet the growing demand. This is partly because the higher frequency allocations issued by regulators to mobile operators travel shorter distances and are less able to penetrate buildings. The problem is compounded by the use of modern building materials, such as metallised glass, which reflect radio signals beamed from outside the building. The mobile data explosion allied to poor coverage is not just causing problems for subscribers. High data demand is creating inefficiencies and bottlenecks in the backhaul network and overloading the macro network. Clearly, MNOs must develop a robust in-building coverage solution to support the rollout of LTE. MNOs should not just see inbuilding coverage as a way to solve a technical problem. Once customers are happy that their in-door wireless coverage has improved, there is an opportunity to access new revenue streams. MNOs can also increase ARPU by encouraging subscribers to move to higher data tariffs, which they will be more willing to do once the experience improves thanks to better in-building coverage. The business case for operators investing in in-building wireless coverage ● Differentiation from the competition thr ough improved Quality of Ser vice ● Improved coverage incr eases ARPU by enabling ubiquitous and consistent wireless use ● Reduce churn ● Bring in new customers due to impr oved coverage ● Drive additional enterprise user r evenues through improved Quality of Experience ● Business users deliver up to 30% of r evenue with 120% higher ARPU ● Reliably deliver higher fr equency 4G ser vices indoors and maximise spectr um investment ● Access high mar gin mobile data r evenue ● Improved efficiency of the cellular network by delivering high modulation rates to mobile data users For more information scan the code with your smartphone MOBILE Zinwave special edition May 2014
