RBS and Natwest have launched a protective cover for the iPhone 4 and 4S that can be used to make mobile payments.

Consumers can use TouchPay by downloading an iOS app from the App Store and attaching a special cover to their device. Once the app is activated, consumers can make purchases of £20 or less at contactless payment enabled retailers. The TouchPay service is in conjunction with Visa and follows a trial where more than 9,000 people expressed an interest in participating. It will initially be available to the first 1,000 people who registered and then available to all RBS and Natwest customers who have iPhones in the near future.

Ben Green, head of mobile at RBS, said: 'TouchPay has proven incredibly popular and shows that our customers want more flexible and convenient ways to pay. Delivered alongside our updated mobile apps, the TouchPay service means that our customers need only carry their smartphone with them to make payments and manage their finances wherever they are.'

Sandra Alzetta, senior vice-president and head of mobile at Visa Europe, said: 'A key industry challenge in bringing mobile contactless payments to consumers is finding ways to enable existing smartphones that do not offer NFC technology. Services like TouchPay show how NFC-enabled accessories for smartphones can deliver the future of payments today and help hasten mainstream adoption.'
