Sony Mobile looks to wow consumers with Xperia Z

Sony Mobile has said it wants to get back to a company that 'wows' people, as it unveiled its new flagship Xperia Z phone at CES in Las Vegas.

Both Vodafone and Three have said they will stock the device, which has a five inch screen and 13MP camera. Carphone Warehouse said the phone will go on sale next month, with Phones 4u selling it from 1 March.

The 4G handset has a 7.9mm thick body and runs on a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor with 2GB of RAM. Among the features is a Stamina mode, which increases its battery life by at least four times, a Bravia Engine Fast Capture camera and water and dust resistance. It can also share music, photos and videos to other NFC-enabled Sony devices through its One Touch feature. The device runs on the Android Jelly Bean operating system.

While Sony had a strong 2012 in the UK, overtaking HTC to become the number two Android manufacturer, it said last night it had more work to do worldwide. In its presentation of the device in Las Vegas, a presentational video said: 'We used to make people say wow all the time. Our unique combination of artists and engineers set out to create a surprise everyday. We forgot the power of that for a while.'

Carphone Warehouse chief commercial officer Graham Stapleton said: 'This is the handset that many of our customers have been waiting for - the HD capabilities raise the bar to a completely new level and are fantastic for users who want to watch and capture extremely high quality video on the go.'
