Tech Data Mobile has lost its distribution contract with Google for Nexus tablets and smart phones, according to industry sources.
Data Select is tipped to replace Tech Data Mobile, as Google reviews its distribution options.
Tech Data Mobile clinched the deal, covering the UK and Germany, last year and is believed to have shipped up to 35,000 Nexus products a week in peak periods.
However sources said Google had decided to end the contract. The decision follows a review of its distribution strategy.
One source said: ‘Tech Data Mobile has been taken off the Nexus distribution deal. It appears to be part of a global restructuring of its distribution strategy. This will be a major blow to Tech Data Mobile, particularly as they are also waiting on a decision on their Sony Mobile distribution deal.’ He added: ‘It isn’t to do with Tech Data’s performance.’
Others claimed Tech Data Mobile had suffered warehousing and IT issues which had prompted Google to withdraw from the deal.
Tech Data Mobile issued the following statement in response to reports of the cancellation of the Google Nexus contract: ‘We’re not able to comment on any specific contractual agreements, however, Tech Data Mobile has a strong relationship with Google and we continue to work together on a number of fronts.’
A Google spokesperson said: ‘Unfortunately, we do not comment on rumor or speculation so I will be unable to pass comment on this occasion.’
A spokesman for Data Select said: ‘No comment.’
