Truphone targets execs with cut price roaming tariff

InternatIonal MVNO Truphone is offering to cut companies' roaming bills by over 40% and transform the way they conduct international business with the launch of a tariff covering 66 countries.

The MVNO targets companies with high levels of international business travel, offering a patented Sim card which allows customers' mobile phones to operate as local phones in an area of eight countries called the Truphone Zone.

The zone covers Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA. Users are allowed multiple international numbers on their Sim, which eliminates the need to swap Sim cards when they travel. Global business partners can reach users with a local call, no matter where they are and all calls and data usage within the Truphone Zone are bundled, eliminating the need for roaming and international calling.

Now the MVNO has extended the reach of the Truphone Zone by launching Truphone World Plan. The tariff covers an additional 58 countries, accounting for 70% of all international travel routes in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania. The MVNO promises local call quality when dialling internationally, and data speeds between three and seven times faster when roaming. Local and international calls inside the Truphone World area are charged as local calls.

Speaking to Mobile this week, Truphone MD Europe, Rob Jones (pictured) said feedback following a pilot with some existing customers had been 'staggeringly positive.' He added: 'Interest levels are very high with over 70% of our customers saying they are interested in taking up the tariff and as data usage continues to increase it becomes more and more relevant to our customers.'

Jones said the tariff will boost customers' cost savings - currently running at around 40% for Truphone Zone users - and increase productivity.

He explained: '60% of Truphone customers say they have to turn off or restrict usage of their smartphones outside of the Truphone Zone, so with Truphone World Plan our customers will be able to work much more effectively with no loss of productivity.'

Jones said Truphone's MNO partners are all tier one operators including Vodafone in the UK. 'We have built a heavyweight global network for b2b customers, with all the infrastructure of an MNO except for the radio mast infrastructure and we work with key operator partners to provide all the billing, customer care, authentication and data services which cuts across all networks.'

Truphone customers include the Formula one team, motorbike manufacturer Harley Davidson as well as start-ups, FTST 100 companies and major international banks.

The company employs 900 staff across eight international offices including its London headquarters. Jones said Truphone is experiencing substantial growth this year, with the Truphone World Plan expected to add impetus. He said: 'Since the beginning of this year our blended acquisition rate has increased 30% month on month.'
