Spectralink’s specialist proposition

The business community is constantly bombarded with the messages about an almost
endless list of tasks that the smartphone could assist them with. However, some situations are just unsuited to smartphone use, or could actually be hindered by having one. It’s this market segment of the market that Spectralink is chasing with its application-specific phones for healthcare, retail and manufacturing.

Rather than making devices that use a cellular connection, Spectralink produces phones that work over Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) and Voice Over Wi-Fi. Simon Longhurst, Spectralink’s alliances manager, explained how the brand’s approach differs from smartphone manufacturers: ‘The communication we deal with is based on the role rather than the individual person, in environments where the staff are frequently changing. There needs to be a device that is suitable for these types of situations. The ruggedness of the devices is also critical; often staff are dealing with harsh environments and hard floors. The final area of importance comes in terms of data security issues - the sending and receiving of important information - which is again based on the role rather than the sender.’

Spectralink has been in the business of making application-specific devices for a number of years and has links to unified communications businesses that go back decades. As expectations about device mobility and functionality have risen, the business has also had to develop new devices to meet these expectations.

The emphasis at Spectralink is very much on the what they do well, as Simon Longhurst explained: ’We make specialised devices for certain markets;, if you are a businessman or you work in an office then smartphone works for that. But if you need a specific functionality we offer a great product.’
