Qualcomm subsidiary targets smart home with ‘one stop shop’

Qualcomm subsidiary, Qualcomm Atheros, has created a ‘one-stop shop’ to make IoT more affordable for equipment manufacturers.

The subsidiary has unveiled a new family of chip sets and a new platform to allow more gateways into the connected home to be built. This will allow OEMs to access a wider range of customers, with Tony Hsu, senior director of product management at Qualcomm Atheros, explaining it has made entering IoT more affordable for manufacturers.

He said: ‘Qualcomm Atheros is creating a new level of smart gateway that is cost optimized for OEMs and fully featured for carriers. This next generation of smart gateways are designed to make it easier and more affordable for OEMs.’

The subsidiary claims the two new products will help OEMs develop gateways into the connected home. These smart gateways are designed to support the next generation of connected devices and systems, with Qualcomm Atheros explaining it will help OEMs deliver more affordable products to consumers.

Qualcomm Atheros recently acquired Ikanos Communications, with the chipmaker claiming the partnership will accelerate its subsidiary’s connected home proposition. Ikanos provides the modem technology to connect smart home devices, with Irvind Ghai, VP of product management at the subsidiary, claiming the partnership offers a ‘one stop shop’ of services.

He said: ‘The combination of Qualcomm Atheros’ broad home networking portfolio and Ikanos’ advanced wired modem technology offers a complete solution for a wide range of home gateway products to better serve the carrier segment. The reference platform delivers a ‘one-stop-shop’ for smart gateway OEMs.’
