Inflight data usage up 160% with AeroMobile

Since launching 3G inflight connectivity a year ago, AeroMobile has revealed a 160 percent increase in inflight data usage year-on-year.

 

With over half of its airline partners now connected to the 3G network, AeroMobile has revealed a significant upsurge of mobile data usage by holidaymakers and business travellers throughout 2016 - whether tweeting, texting, emailing, calling or messaging.

 

In its first year, AeroMobile claims a 160 percent increase in inflight mobile data usage, 22 percent increase in inflight users, and 14 percent increase in sent SMS.

 

By the end of 2016 over half of AeroMobile’s airline partners offered aircraft with 3G connectivity and it’s now available on flights to 55 country destinations, with USA, Australia and Ireland topping the table for 3G inflight data usage.

 

AeroMobile recorded its first inflight phone call in 2008 and was the first to launch 3G inflight in December 2015. The AeroMobile service allows passengers to use their own mobile devices to call, text and browse the internet inflight, and now has over 340 roaming agreements in more than 145 countries. The AeroMobile service is currently available on Air Berlin, Aer Lingus, Air France, Alitalia, Emirates, Etihad, EuroWings, EVA Air, Cathay Pacific, KLM, Lufthansa, Malindo Air, Qatar Airways, SAS, Singapore Airlines, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, SWISS and Virgin Atlantic.

 

AeroMobile’s inflight network uses satellite technology. Signals are beamed from the aircraft to the satellite via small base stations onboard (called pico-cells) and the aircraft's antenna. The hardware to enable the service is stored in a server rack, usually at the back of the aircraft, and a control panel, usually at the front, allows cabin crew to manage the service.

AeroMobile Communications Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Panasonic Avionics Corporation. AeroMobile’s services are available for installation either at the point of aircraft manufacture (line fit) or on aircraft in service (retrofit) across both Airbus and Boeing aircraft.
