O2 buoyed as south-west business dealer Uplands buys rival’s base
Uplands Mobile, one of the biggest and most respected business dealers in the country, has acquired Mobile Radio UK’s O2 base of 3,500 active customers.
The deal will also pool all future connections, as well as technical expertise from Mobile Radio.
Uplands chief Paul Hooper said the two companies, based in the south-west of England, had developed an agreement in recent years not to poach customers from each other. He also said the deal was rooted in the need to find scale in the current market.
Hooper (pictured, left) added: ‘As networks are placing more and more pressure on individual companies to achieve the minimum connectivity and high average spend, it is inevitable that some companies will have to look at their core competencies and may find that they must consider working with others to strengthen their overall offerings.’
Mobile Radio wasn’t part of O2’s ‘centre of excellence’ programme and, as a result, didn’t have the superior deals afforded to those dealers.
O2 gave its blessing to the deal, believing it will enhance the operator’s firepower in the region. O2’s head of partners, Maggie Kennedy, said: ‘I ?am sure this will work out to be a great opportunity for both Uplands and their customers. We put the customers at the heart of our business and this is reflected in the way Paul, Steve and their teams work.’
Mobile Radio managing director Steve Lawton (pictured, right) said: ‘We thought it was necessary to take our skills to a bigger company. I have known Paul for a long time, and am delighted to be working with him and sharing best practices.’
Lawton said he will continue to run his business from Taunton and run certain repairs and installation work independently of the deal.
