Tanny Price takes general manager role at Brightstar
Tanny Price will move back into distribution as general manager of Brightstar’s UK business next week, Mobile can exclusively reveal.
Price is expected to spearhead Brightstar’s advance into airtime, to become a dominant force in UK distribution.
It is aiming to build its growth by providing connected smartphones and laptops through IT resellers.
The business is not looking to enter the traditional airtime distribution market. Instead, sources close to the matter claimed Brightstar bosses have identified IT/mobile convergence as the sector with the most potential, and one not fully catered for by rivals.
Brightstar has airtime distribution deals with four out of the five networks: Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and 3. It is believed to have secured those deals through its laptop and dongle capabilities, and routes to the IT market via sister company, TechData.
Price’s credentials in airtime distribution, her contacts among dealers and networks, as well as her experience of managing a distributor, made her an ideal appointment for Brightstar at a time when it was looking for airtime capability, sources said.
Price (pictured) will be responsible for the UK business, reporting to Brightstar European president Rod Millar, and working alongside current UK managing director Richard Baxendale, who is believed to be taking a new European and business development role.
Price joins after a turbulent few months amid court battles with former employer Avenir over her role as head of distribution at Vodafone’s enterprise unit Yes Telecom, which abruptly ended in May after just four months.
Brightstar has bolstered its team with 20 new recruits in recent weeks, of which 10 will work on customising laptops and smartphones for specific operators and retailers, and 10 are understood to be in sales and purchasing.
The distributor also moved from Oxford last month to its larger offices in Basingstoke, which it shares with Tech Data.
Brightstar declined to comment.
