Ingram Micro launches new mobile assault with T-Mobile pay as you go
Mobile and IT distributor Ingram Micro has added T-Mobile prepay handsets to its portfolio.
The move comes as the distributor prepares to review its mobile strategy in the New Year.
Ingram Micro, which is one of the world’s largest IT distributors, moved into mobile several years ago but has struggled to make any real impact in the telecoms industry.
Until recently, the company viewed mobile connections as a way of ‘adding value’ to the software solutions it provides, rather than as the core focus of the mobile arm.
However, sources close to the company claimed Ingram Micro’s connections had increased four-fold after adding T-Mobile pay as you go to its product portfolio.
Ingram Micro has successfully been selling T-Mobile dongles since it took on the operator two years ago. T-Mobile did not comment on the move.
In 2010, Ingram Micro will look at pushing mobility again, with the source adding that the company is still working on ‘raising awareness’ of its mobile connections service.
The distributor is to consider alternative ways of rewarding customers and may also take on the Vodafone One Net service in the coming months.
Ingram Micro has made a range of management changes over the past year, with several heads of mobility making sudden departures.
Meanwhile, there have also been changes at the top level of the company. Matthew Sanderson recently took over as UK MD after Julian Klein departed, and his original replacement, Pablo Suarez, dropped the position before starting.
