GK Telecom secures T-Mobile deal
GK Telecom is the first distributor to bank a T-Mobile airtime deal since the network dropped Fone Logistics and Avenir Telecom over one year ago.
Slough based GK Telecom has had a relationship with T-Mobile since 2007, predominantly distributing Sim cards to its customer base.
GK Telecom director Gummy Dulku said its previous dealings with T-Mobile had allowed it to move into the airtime connections. The agreement is currently on a trial basis.
The move comes after T-Mobile dropped Fone Logistics in 2008 and Avenir Telecom in early 2009, after the distributors failed to meet the operator’s targets.
T-Mobile national sales manager for independent partners John Fannon said: ‘It is a significant move; distribution decisions and contracts are not awarded lightly.
‘The independent side of the business depends upon and is built upon relationships. These are not established overnight but are built up over significant time periods by gaining trust and reputations for excellence. Without this essential “time-served” aspect to a relationship, it is difficult to gain the trust of partners.’
GK Telecom is now looking to recruit dealers and will target areas where T-Mobile is not as strong.
Dulku said: ‘The space we are currently in is international traffic, where there are ethnic people and university towns, and we market directly to the retailer. We will now be working with dealers who are looking for a certain level of service. This is about us being stable and profitable.
‘We want to give good service to the right dealers and want to target areas where T-Mobile is not very strong, like the Midlands.’
Meanwhile, the distributor has appointed Debbie Young as network director to head up its transition from Sim card distribution to airtime.
Young, who previously worked at Advantage Cellular and Unique Distribution, will work on recruiting dealers to connect T-Mobile through GK Telecom.
The distributor already has an airtime agreement with 3.
3 head of business Paul Foley said: ‘We need to work hand in hand with GK to ensure our dealer community is well supported.’
