Mobile industry raises £70,000 at quiz night for charity Get Connected

Over 270 executives from the mobile phone industry raised £69,470 at the first Get Connected Quiz at Floridita in central London last week. The money will go towards funding the charity’s national helpline for young people and its team of volunteers.

The Quiz attracted a sell out audience from the mobile industry. Teams included one from long term Get Connected supporter Carphone Warehouse, whose chairman Charles Dunstone also chairs the charity. HTC, Nokia, LG, Samsung, Motorola, Vodafone, O2 and Everything Everywhere were among the other companies who also fielded teams.

A team from Credit Suisse won the Quiz, but only just. They squeezed in a mere half point ahead of a team that included Daniel Radcliffe, of Harry Potter fame, who is also the first ‘Best Friend’ supporter of the charity.

Ahead of each round, teams could bid for specialist ‘Brainiac’ help from the likes of cricket legend Phil Tufnell, Lonely Planet Magazine’s Tom Hall, Dave Clark, 2007 Champion of Mastermind and Jesse Honey, reigning champion of Mastermind. Top Gear’s (not-so) mystery driver The Stig made a special appearance for the last round on sport. Being fully helmeted, it’s debatable how much help he was, but he made for a popular photo opportunity.

The Quiz was hosted by stand up comedian Iain Stirling, ably supported by Get Connected’s CEO Fiona Clark, who was kept busy totting up the bids for various Brainiacs. 2009 X-Factor finalist Stacey Solomon entertained the crowd with a medley of songs after the Quiz ended.

Get Connected is the national helpline for young people under 25 and it provides free, confidential help. They ensure that young people find the most appropriate help on any issue, across the UK and offer a free connection to thousands of services. In 2009-10, Get Connected Helpline volunteers supported 20,000 children and young people.
