Ofcom probes into ‘not spots’
Ofcom has launched an investigation into the extent and causes of mobile ‘not spots’ in Devon, Mobile can exclusively reveal.
If the research programme is a success, its findings could be rolled out across the country.
The investigation, in partnership with Everything Everywhere, O2, Vodafone and 3, is looking at the causes of ‘not spots’ and their impact on consumers in the area in a bid to find ways of improving coverage. It will also compare its findings to the operators’ ‘not spot’ mappings to see how accurate they are.
Ofcom is planning an interim report on the findings of the investigation this autumn and will consider whether to roll out further ‘not spot’ investigations across the country.
Ofcom has made the problem of mobile and broadband ‘not spots’ a key priority this year. It stated: ‘We are undertaking a programme of research to improve our understanding of mobile not-spots. Ofcom intends to publish further thinking on the causes of not spots; where they are; and what impact they have on citizens and consumer across the UK, later this year.’
