Tablet sales will surge to nearly 20 million this year, driven by Apple’s iPad, according to analyst firm Gartner.
Sales of tablets will reach 19.5 million, Gartner said, rising to 54.8 million in 2011 and 208 million in 2014.
According to Gartner, 103 million tablets will be sold in 2012 and 154 million units in 2013.
Gartner said that operators who have so far subsidised notebooks to drive mobile broadband uptake will shift their marketing spend to media tablets.
Meanwhile, the analyst predicted that the impact of tablets on other devices would vary among segments.
Smartphones in the high-end are likely to suffer while those in the lower price bracket will not be hit, Gartner said. Devices likely to suffer will be ereaders, gaming devices, media players and mini notebooks –which face the biggest threat as tablet average selling prices drop below $300 over the next two years.
This year, mobile and Wi-Fi combined tablets will account for 55% of sales, and by 2014, for 80% of sales.
