First Nokia MeeGo device will launch next year

Nokia will not launch its first MeeGo handset until next year, its new CEO Stephen Elop said yesterday (21 October).

He said: ‘There have been various comments made at various points in time about the anticipated availability of our first MeeGo device and versions of the MeeGo software.

‘My first impressions of our MeeGo work inspires both confidence and excitement, however it is also clear to me that our first MeeGo device will be a 2011 event.

‘I see the broad penetration and user familiarity of both Series 40 and Symbian as an asset for the company that must be carefully managed and renewed over time.’

The move follows news that Nokia is restructuring the company and removing 1,800 jobs globally.

The manufacturer said the move, which will see changes in the Symbian division as well as in services, will increase effectiveness.

Nokia is planning to increase responsiveness to consumer demands and reduce time to market for Symbian products.

Changes will also be made to Nokia’s services organisation to focus on integrating Ovi experience across the full range of Nokia’s devices.
