Ofcom launches spectrum timetable
Spectrum auctions will take place in 2012, according to an Ofcom timetable announced this week.
Ofcom set out a timetable for the auction and provision of next-generation LTE in the UK during a speech at the FT World Telecoms Conference.
However, the process of auctioning and implementing the 800MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum may be delayed.
Consultation will begin in February next year and will last until May, followed by the auctions at the start of 2012. Spectrum will not be awarded until 2013 and LTE networks are not expected to begin operating until around the start of 2014.
Ofcom CEO Ed Richards said he expects Parliament to consider the draft legislation laid within the next week or so. This will direct the release of this spectrum and pave the way for the creation of LTE networks in the UK, he added.
