RIM’s BlackBerry shipments surged 40% to 14.2 million during the quarter, passing Apple’s most recent iPhone numbers.
The manufacturer reported its results for the quarter ended 27 November 2010 yesterday (16 December).
Third quarter net profit jumped 45%, while revenue was up 40% to $5.5bn. RIM had over 55 million BlackBerry subscriber accounts at the end of November, after activations of 5.1 million accounts. RIM’s BlackBerry Torch was released to more than 75 retailers in the quarter after being launched in the US in August.
Meanwhile, co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis have been named co-chairmen of the board. John Richardson remains as lead independent director of RIM and will continue to facilitate the functioning of the board independently of management.
Jim Estill has resigned as director of RIM after 13 years, due to a business conflict.
The company expects revenue of between $5.5bn and $5.7bn from its December to February quarter.
