Phones 4u’s Ben Carter to join Pace

Former Phones 4u director of purchasing Ben Carter is poised to join digital set-top box technologies company Pace, according to sources.

Carter will join his former colleague Mark Loughran, who left Nokia last year to head up Pace’s new business division, Pace Enterprise.

In December, Mobile reported that Carter was set to leave Phones 4u on Christmas Eve.

Changes to the structure of Phones 4u’s purchasing department, headed up by trading director Scott Hooton, will follow in the New Year.

Carter joined Phones 4u’s commercial team in July 2009, when he was appointed to head up a new department combining prepay and contract buying across the company. He was responsible for purchasing and proposition across all categories at Phones 4u, reporting to Hooton.

When Carter joined from Nokia UK, where he was sales operations director, he was warmly received by suppliers. His arrival was seen as a major coup for Phones 4u.

It came after several mid-ranking and senior exits at the retailer, including Simon Boyd, Damian Gowland and James Lumb.

Previously, Peter O’Connell and Justin Young left the company’s trading team to join Littlewoods.

Carter is credited with helping to develop the purchasing function at the retailer, leaving Phones 4u in a ‘strong position’ to be able to provide its customers with propositions across both prepay and contract.
