Samsung to launch smartphone market attack

Samsung has launched an attack on the smartphone market, pledging to double its volumes and ship around 50 million units this year.

The manufacturer had 9% smartphone market share at the end of Q3 2010, up from 3% a year earlier. It aims to sell more than 50 million units - running Android, Windows Phone 7 and its own Bada OS - in 2011.

Speaking at CES, Samsung mobile communications president JK Shin said the company will reveal its 2011 smartphone and tablet portfolio at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.

The manufacturer is expected to launch its first dual-core handsets on its Galaxy S range at Mobile World Congress in February.
