RIM CEO: NFC-enabled BlackBerrys to launch in 2011

RIM will launch NFC-enabled BlackBerrys in 2011, the manufacturer’s CEO Jim Balsillie revealed at Mobile World Congress this morning.

Balsillie said that ‘many, if not all’ upcoming Blackberry devices will feature integrated NFC technology.

The upcoming BlackBerry Apollo, Curve Touch, Storm 3 and Torch 2 handsets are rumoured to include the technology.

It follows the announcement that Google’s Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) will include NFC.

Meanwhile, Balsillie has rejected comments that Blackberry is no longer a major player in the smartphone market.

Balsillie said that BlackBerry had witnessed 70% growth last year and was also the number one phone in the UK last year.

He said: 'I don't know how you can say that we are not in the race. Are people writing us off? We have had huge growth in the last year. I wouldn't write us off.’

Balsille added that 80% of new subscribers are consumers.
