Smartphones sales up as Android handsets lead
Android handset share in the UK has grown by 810% since last year, from 6.6% of market share in February 2010, according to GfK’s latest figures.
Smartphones claimed 48.7% of all handset sales and 83.1% of contract sales in February 2011 as Android dominated the smartphone operating system with a 34.1% share.
Total handset market volume declined by1.8%, driven by the prepay market. The analyst said growth of the smartphone market has impacted the features and specifications that consumers now look for when purchasing their new handsets.
Meanwhile, nearly 60% of contract handsets sold in February 2011 were block-QWERTY handsets.
As tariff customers near the end of their contracts, analysts speculated there will be further growth the smartphone market.
