RIM buys app developer tinyHippos

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has bought Canadian mobile application developer tinyHippos, for an undisclosed sum.

The Ontario-based company is the creator of Ripple, a cross-platform mobile app development and testing tool.

Tyler Lessard, RIM's VP of global alliances and developer relations, said on the developer's blog that the company was bought for its ‘extensive experience in web and mobile widget and web development.’

The move strengthens RIM's drive into the tablet market. Next month it will launch its first tablet Playbook, which it hopes will grab share from Apple's iPad and make major inroads into the enterprise market.
