Nicola Philbin is to head up Huawei Devices' global account for Hutchison Whampoa as part of Huawei's major drive into the own branded devices market.
Philbin, who was formerly Huawei's UK and Ireland general manager of devices, will take on responsibility for implementing a consumer branding strategy for key Huawei devices across the operator’s territories. In tandem, Philbin is to focus on growth of Huawei’s existing supply of mobile broadband dongles and home devices to Hutchison Whampoa.
Philbin’s new role is part of a swingeing restructuring at Huawei which also sees Mark Mitchinson appointed as Huawei’s UK and Ireland executive VP. The restructuring is part of the Chinese manufacturer's strategy to grow its share of the own branded market.
Huawei has set its sights on carving out a substantial share of the own branded devices market in the UK with major plans to build its brand and position in the consumer market this year. It also launched a major recruitment drive in the UK last month as part of the same strategy.
Philbin has played a key role in growing Huawei's marketshare in the UK and Ireland over the past six years. She said: ‘It has been an honour to lead the UK terminals business for the past six years, and to see it grow from nothing to be a leading supplier of ODM handsets, mobile broadband dongles, set-top boxes, FMC units and home gateways. It has a broad-ranging portfolio, and one that will acquire new depth in the coming months.’
