Huawei to double handset shipments in 2011
Huawei will double its handset shipments to 60 million in 2011, according to reports.
The move comes as the Chinese manufacturer plots to launch phones under its own brand name in the UK this year.
The target includes 12 million smartphones, a four-fold increase on the 2010 sales figure.
According to the reports, Huawei will launch eight to 10 new smartphone models in 2011. Around 80% of those will be entry to mid level.
Sales under the Huawei brand will start later this year in the UK and China, supported by an advertising campaign.
Huawei last month reported profits of £2.23bn for 2010 – up 30% from 2009. Sales revenue grew 24.2% to £17.4bn during the year ended 31 December 2010.
Industry veteran Mark Mitchinson has recently taken on a role heading up Huawei in the UK.
