RIM’s PlayBook shifts fewer units than tablets using Microsoft’s OS
RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet shifted fewer units than those using Microsoft software during Q2 2011, according to analyst firm Strategy Analytics.
The news comes despite Microsoft not having launched a version of its Windows software designed specifically for tablets. The computer giant picked up 4.6% market share during the second quarter compared with the Playbook’s 3.3% share.
Meanwhile, iPad manufacturer Apple fought off an increasingly strong competition from Google’s Android OS with a 61.3% share.
Android increased its market share from 2.9% in Q2 2010 to 30% in Q2 2011.
It is expected that Microsoft, which uses the same software for tablets as it uses for computers, will launch tablet-specific software late next year.
RIM launched its first tablet, the PlayBook, in April.
