Global mobile transaction hub OpenMarket today ( 4 August) announced that it has raised more than £1m in SMS donations for the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) East Africa drought appeal.
OpenMarket said that a further £250,000 has also been raised through Gift Aid using the company’s mobile payments and campaign management platform.
OpenMarket general manager for Europe Alex Moir said: ‘Given that this campaign has been running for less than a month, the UK public’s response to the appeal via SMS has been incredible. OpenMarket’s CMX2 platform is designed for donations to be made in an instant and we have also seen a very positive response to the Gift Aid option.
‘To raise more than £1.25 million through SMS donations is an indication of how mobile payment mechanisms are powerful tools for charities to achieve high impact donation responses.’
The DEC East Africa drought campaign, which launched in the UK on 8 July, raises funds to help provide victims affected by droughts with humanitarian aid.
The DEC organisation is combination of 14 UK and International charity agencies that deliver help and support to victims of major disasters such as floods, earthquakes or drought.
Mobile phone users can donate £5 directly to the appeal by simple texting ‘HELP’, ‘CRISIS’, ‘AID’, ‘DONATE’, ‘HELP’, ‘SUPPORT’ or ‘AFRICA’ to 70000.
