Mobile phone operators face massive charges hike after BT wins appeal

Mobile operators will have to pay BT millions of pounds after the Competition Appeals Tribunal ruled that BT can increase its charges to mobile phone operators.

BT appealed to the Competition Appeals Tribunal after Ofcom ruled that BT could not increase its charges to Vodafone, Everything Everywhere and O2, despite those firms charging its users more than 8p per minute to access 0845, 0800 and 0870 numbers.

However, the Competition Appeals Tribunal judged BT could charge the mobile operators extra and could also recover some charges retrospectively, thought to be around £19 million in the second quarter.

The ruling comes as a further blow to Vodafone, Everything Everywhere and O2, who are already battling against falling revenues.
