Vodafone announces operator billing for apps on Android Market
Vodafone today announced the first rollout in Europe of direct operator billing for apps on the Android Market. Vodafone UK and Vodafone Germany will help consumers purchase apps and games on the Android Market without the need to enter credit card details or use Google's Checkout service.
Instead, customers can put the cost straight onto their phone bills or prepay accounts. The move will provide developers with direct access to millions of Android users who are unwilling or unable to use credit cards. In some countries, this can be more than 90% of the market.
The service will initially be available to users who have purchased their devices through Vodafone's online and retail channels, making the potential for app purchase even greater for developers.
Vodafone said that this evolution in Android app payment greatly improves the user’s purchase experience and consequently their likelihood of completing a sale.
Other countries in Europe are expected to be added to the service fairly shortly.
