Orange expands NFC offering with Samsung Wave 578

Orange and Barclaycard have announced the launch of the second handset from the Quick Tap contactless handset range, the Samsung Wave 578.

The operator has expanded its NFC portfolio following the success of the Samsung Tocco Quick Tap at the launch its mobile contactless payments service in May this year.

The Samsung Wave 578, which runs on Samsung’s Bada OS features a bright 3.2” WQVGA TFT screen, social networking integration as well as and Wi-Fi and a MicroSD. The 3G+ handset also boasts a 3.2-megapixel camera video recording and Bluetooth.

Orange director of propositions Simeon Bird said: ‘We’re pleased to be offering the Samsung Wave 578, which is the next in a range of Quick Tap enabled mobiles we have planned for the UK. Only on Orange will customers benefit from the greater convenience and control over their high street purchases which Quick Tap provides them with.’

The Wave 578 Quick Tap can be used to make purchases of £15 and under at over 50,000 stores nationwide such as Prêt a Manger, EAT, Little Chef, Wembley Arena, Subway, Wilkinson and McDonalds. Barclaycard, Barclays debit or Orange credit card users can then load funds of up to £100 simply using the Quick Tap app.

Meanwhile, Barclaycard also announced that it will be giving Orange customers £10 cash added to their account upon activation, and 10% cash back on all Quick Tap purchases made within 90 days.

Barclaycard Consumer Europe CEO David Chan said: ‘Paying with a mobile phone means never being without the right change, and always having access to funds. That’s why I believe contactless mobile is the future of payments, and I’m keen it’s made available to as many of our customers as possible. At the launch of our first contactless handset earlier this year we promised we would roll out greater choice in the ‘Quick Tap’ range and I’m pleased to be able to announce the first of these new handsets today.’

Consumers will be able to get their hands on the Samsung Wave 578 with Quick Tap from Orange’s stores and via the Orange website in the next few weeks. The handset is available on pay as you go and free on select price plans.
