Huawei UK and Ireland executive VP Mark Mitchinson is headhunting a crack team to spearhead the manufacturer’s aggressive assault on the UK smartphone market.
Mitchinson (pictured) has poached Samsung’s product management chief Jim Powell to head up Huawei’s product management and appointed LG Mobile’s key account manager Richard Ward as Huawei’s account director. Former MJ Solutions consultant Med Jeewoth also joins Huawei, as account manager for the open market.
Powell played a key part in the rollout of Samsung’s hugely successful Galaxy portfolio. His appointment will come as a body blow to Samsung Mobile, sending a strong message to the UK mobile market that Mitchinson is out to build a formidable team using his extensive industry contacts and influence in the UK market.
Mitchinson told Mobile: ‘I believe wholeheartedly in the abilities of my current team and over the coming months we will look to bolster that team significantly.’
Referring to his latest appointments, Mitchinson said: ‘These are just a few of the key individuals that will help us to achieve great things in the years ahead,’ indicating plans to recruit more senior industry figures.
All three new recruits bring broad industry experience to Huawei. Powell joined Samsung as head of product management in 2009, when Mitchinson was Samsung Mobile’s UK MD. His former posts include head of product marketing at Virgin Mobile and product marketing manager at Dixons.
Ward was responsible for O2 relations at LG Mobile. His former post was European and UK account director for Carphone Warehouse and O2 at Motorola Mobility.
Jeewoth was previously UK country manager at Toshiba UK and senior account manager at Nokia.
Analysts said rival manufacturers will be wary of Mitchinson’s recruitment drive.
Ben Wood at CCS Insight said: ‘Manufacturers will be very nervous that Mark is going to woo their key people to Huawei. He has a fantastic address book and will be knocking on doors looking to poach people.’
Strategy Analytics director Neil Mawston said: ‘Huawei is determined to be a key player in the UK smartphone market and will be prepared to throw plenty of money at recruiting the right team. This will send a shiver down the backs of rival manufacturers.'
