Carphone Warehouse’s Daniel Shirreff has said he is ‘absolutely over the moon’ to win the Store Manager of the Year award.
Shirreff, manager of the Leeds Briggate branch, won the award in a tightly fought competition between six finalists. The judges said it was a marginal decision between him and Quintin von Waltsleben winning the prize.
Shirreff was off work today [9 December] when he found out he had won the award. He said: ‘All of a sudden I just got a flood of texts from people congratulating me. I was absolutely over the moon.’
Shirreff has worked at Carphone for more than 11 years and has a daily journey of 150 miles to and from his store. He was appointed manager of the Briggate store last year and is in charge of a team of 30.
The judges described Shirreff as 'a man of integrity who had gone into a challenging store and turned around a bad situation with the complete support of his team, while keeping an eye out for their career progression and ensuring customer satisfaction was high.’
Shirreff said it was people management that he most enjoyed about the job. He said: ‘When I started I had no experience in sales or management. I learned from the people I worked for and picked up the best bits from all of them. You can’t deny that sense of pride when one of your guys moves onto another store and is promoted.’
Carphone Warehouse UK MD Matt Stringer said: ‘I am delighted that Daniel has won the prestigious Store Manager of the Year award. For us at Carphone he is a genuine role model in inspiring and guiding our customers and indeed his own colleagues.‘He is a very worthy winner, and it sends out a very positive message to all his colleagues who offer our customers an excellent service.’
The other finalists were T-Mobile’s Stewart McLintock, Phones 4u’s Obaid Rahman, O2’s Rachel Albinson and Tesco Mobile’s Ashish Joshi.
